The Great Condiment Debate

Whenever we get together for family meal, the conversation at one point will turn to condiments. Which is better - salt or pepper? "Butter is the answer, you fools!!" my brother will exclaim. The conversation goes from there.

Here is my question to you: if you could only put one of these items on your dinner table each night for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?
1. salt
2. pepper
3. butter

Explain your answer in detail.

You may also tell us your thoughts about mustard v. ketchup (catsup not allowed).

Salt and Ketchup. Salt is a flavor enhancer and helps bring out more subtle underlying flavors. Ketchup is is a flavor obscurer and replaces the underlying flavor with the delicious flavor of tomato paste and vinegar.

1. Salt, obviously. It makes almost anything more delicious. Butter is all well and good, but it is not as versatile. Would you put it on chicken? French fries? Gross. Plus, unlike salt, butter has a ton of calories and has to be refrigerated.

Pepper is stupid and not even worth commenting on. How it got its place on the table alongside salt is beyond me.

2. Mustard.

It is a more effective flavor obscurer than ketchup, and it tastes way better. Ketchup is for suckers.
